// Ahh~ Stress relief time with Thunderlane is really nice… Everything’s been way too complicated lately, so it’s nice to know that I can just unwind over at his place for a while. And he’s fairly tasty too. It’s not pure love, but at least it’s directed at the true me. Which counts for a whole lot more than some ponies think. I really shouldn’t make a habit of this though… Maybe after this mess is over I’ll take him on a real date.

So as I was laying in my bed last night, I pondered the origins of Changelings and their anatomy. I also ended up working out the specifics of the changeling curse or whatever that is causing them to need to feed on other creatures emotions. Which is also what causes their short life spans. Keep in mind this is mostly simply musings on my part, but is cannon for whatever story this blog has I suppose.

The source of the changelings problems is basically a hole in their heart, which drains their energy. It grows as time goes on and the less energy they have, the faster it grows. So any periods of famine or emotional stress cause it to grow rapidly. There’s no known way to reverse this growth, and eventually it becomes too much for the changeling to manage, and they die.

So this all came about when I was thinking about changeling anatomy. Since, if you’ve noticed, they get very, very thin towards their rears. So I figured that was simply because they didn’t actually have a digestive system. And that instead of chemical energy, like most creatures, they run on emotional energy. So their heart is quite large for their size. But then I thought that the heart wouldn’t actually need to pump blood, but magical energies. Well emotional/magical energies.

Which lead me to thinking that it might not be made of normal flesh as I thought of other cannon materials that have been known to conduct emotional energies. Which lead to the connection between the changelings and the Crystal Heart.

So the Crystal Heart thing. At first I thought it would just be a changeling artifact or something, as that seems like it would be something they’d want. Spreading love and whatnot seems incredibly useful. Then I thought it might actually originate from the changelings. Then my head took a rather dark turn, and I thought that it might be made OF changelings.

And that it is, quite literally the still active heart of the first and last whole changeling queen, twisted into a mockery of itself by King Sombra. Who also used it’s connection to the rest of the hive to drain their energies in order for it to stay active, which is the origin of the hole that each changeling now carries in it’s heart.

I had some motives and whatnot, but really Sombra doesn’t really need a reason to be all evil and stuff. I figured he was just jealous of their long lives and his weird obsession with crystals.

Oh, and my previous headcannon was that Five’s crystal core was made of the same stuff as the Crystal Heart, which would cause all of his emotional stuff that he can do. This sadly also fits in with this new cannon. Yeah, Five’s core is quite literally made from one of the last remaining full changeling hearts, that was spared from the corruption of the crystal heart.

But since changelings are cursed to having such a short lifespan now, none of them actually know of a time when they didn’t have to drain ponies. And if any knowledge of these events actually exists, it’d be buried deep in the crystal library.

So yeah, that’s now my headcannon connecting all this random stuff together. I don’t know how much of it is actually going to be used for this story. Feel free to ignore it entirely, as it’s rather fragile, in that future cannon can easily destroy it if the 4th season decides to go back and shed some light on this stuff.
